Would you like to be a Regional Editor of Environmental Technology?

Environmental Technology is a leading journal for the rapid publication of science and technology papers on a wide range of topics in applied environmental studies, from environmental engineering to environmental biotechnology, the circular economy, municipal and industrial wastewater management, drinking-water treatment, air- and water-pollution control, solid-waste management, industrial hygiene and associated technologies.

Environmental Technology is intended to provide rapid publication of new developments in environmental technology. The journal has an international readership with a broad scientific base. Contributions are accepted from scientists and engineers in industry, government and universities. Accepted manuscripts are generally published within four months.

We are looking for a new Regional Editor who will act as the main point-of-contact for the Journal in their region. They will support and inform the mission for the Journal, working alongside the Editor-in-Chief and Taylor & Francis, and then execute that mission through soliciting, commissioning, reviewing and developing articles and other features of the highest quality. The Regional Editor will demonstrate vision, leadership, and creativity, and play a valuable role in shaping the future direction of the Journal. The successful candidate will be supported in their activities by Taylor & Francis. Taylor & Francis will also provide renumeration for the role to cover journal-related expenses.

The tasks to be undertaken will include but not be limited to:

  • Day to day manuscript management: desk screening of submissions, selection of referees and management of the peer review process, provision of summary advice to authors, and making final decisions, ensuring that the high quality of the Journal is maintained. Submission system training will be provided.
  • Be an ambassador for the Journal; continuing to build, nurture and grow a community around Environmental Technology. Networking to increase awareness of the articles published in the Journal at relevant conferences and communities. Maintaining a geographical presence for the editorial board.
  • Strategy and development: working with the publisher, Taylor & Francis, and the Portfolio Manager to identify and implement strategies to enhance the quality and reputation of the Journal, its citation levels and readership/circulation.
  • Commissioning content: encouraging the submission of articles to the Journal from expert researchers in the field, including colleagues and ‘rising stars’. Suggesting potential contributors and generating ideas for Special Issues and reviews.
  • Working with the Portfolio Manager, Regional Editors and editorial board: participating in regular communication and arranged meetings with the Portfolio Manager, Regional Editors, and wider editorial board. Alongside the wider team, setting and implementing editorial policy for the Journal.

Interested in applying? Here are the skills and attributes we would be looking for in a successful applicant:

  • Someone who is active in the disciplines covered by the Journal, with strong personal networks.
  • Previous experience as an associate editor or active editorial board member.
  • Confidence to engage with authors and researchers to solicit the highest quality submissions.
  • Strong organisational skills to ensure that submissions are handled in a timely manner.
  • The ability to foster positive working relationships with colleagues in the Journal’s editorial team.
  • An understanding of research and publishing ethics.

The role is for an initial term of three years and the proposed formal start date is from 1st October 2020. A transitional phase can be discussed and decided.
