Gerontology & Geriatrics Education invites manuscript submissions for a special issue: Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Gerontological Education.

Technology is all around us and has many applications in gerontological education, ranging from creating training situations for care provision (e.g., virtual patients, Telehealth) and empathy raising sensory experiences (e.g., dementia simulations) to providing accessible continuing professional education opportunities for practitioners.

 

Technology has also played a significant role in facilitating intergenerational learning during the pandemic, and offers new avenues for addressing challenges of communication, social isolation, and making aging in place a safer, more viable option for many older adults. Artificial intelligence (AI) is also finding its way into educating current and future gerontology and geriatrics practitioners.

For this special issue, technology is broadly defined to include hardware, software, artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual reality, information and communication as they relate specifically to gerontological education.

Topics that will be considered for this special issue on Technology and AI in Gerontological Education include but are not limited to:

 

• Educating current and future gerontological researchers and practitioners on the ethical use of technology within the classroom, in developing scholarly research and publications, and in working with older adults.
• Successful strategies for supporting older adults and care providers in how to adopt and make use of technology ranging from smart phones and tablets to care-bots, wearables, and home health monitoring devices.
• Improving educational engagement and proficiency through the use of AI (e.g., Bard, ChatGPT) and other technology in the gerontology classroom.
• Preparing students, researchers, and professionals in the field of aging to embrace technological innovations.
• Employing technology to increase access to professional development and continuing education opportunities in gerontology and geriatrics.
• Training staff on proper techniques for employing technology in service and care for older adults.
• The role of technology in addressing challenges of communication, social isolation, and/or aging in place for older adults.
