About Gut Microbes Reports

Over the last 20 years, advances in sequencing technologies have propelled the microbiome field forward and revealed the importance of the commensal intestinal microbiota in health and disease. Groups who adopted these technologies earlier on published novel studies describing compositional differences in cases vs. controls in the context of different diseases, and these findings have led to more refined investigations of specific mechanistic pathways that are critical for leveraging these technologies for precision medicine applications.

However, the microbiome field is still evolving, becoming incorporated into new areas of clinical study and developing standards for scientific rigor, which investigations will yield new and important insights, but fail to discretely address mechanistic directions.

Gut Microbes Reports fills the need for a well-respected and highly visible journal which features rigorous, clinically translational studies that reflect developing topics in the microbiome and related fields.

Rather than these studies being published in esoteric, specialized journals, dividing content over multiple sources and diluting important similarities and differences among studies, Gut Microbes Reports will provide a robust home for this work as the go-to first choice for translational research from new investigators or those exploring new areas, making all researchers feel engaged and considered.

                Meet the editor of Gut Microbes Reports

                Dr. Staley is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

                He completed his doctorate in Environmental and Ecological Microbiology at the University of South Florida. His lab research focus is to characterize how disruptions in the intestinal microbiota affect the onset and progression of diseases and conditions e.g., obesity, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory bowel diseases. By applying microbial ecology principles and leveraging next-generation sequencing technologies, their goal is to develop targeted, microbiota-based therapies to improve patient outcomes.

                He is a member of the Masonic Cancer Center and BioTechnology Institute at the University of Minnesota and of the American Society for Microbiology and American Association for Cancer Research. He has published more than 100 papers related to the microbiome in various settings and environments and has reviewed for over 80 different peer-reviewed journals. He is also an Editor for Clinical Microbiology Reviews, senior editorial board member for BMC Microbiology, and serves on the editorial board of several other journals.
