Call for Associate Editor

Journal of Sustainable Tourism

Deadline:
30 August 2021

About the Role

The Journal of Sustainable Tourism is inviting expressions of interest in the role of Associate Editor. This arises from a change in editorial structure, in which Prof. Xavier Font will take up the role of Editor-in-Chief, to be supported by four Associate Editors. We are now initiating a process to appoint Associate Editors, initially for a four year term, starting in January 2022.

The primary function of Associate Editors will be handle submissions that are assigned to them, overseeing the journal’s peer review processes, and bringing papers to a final recommendation that will be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief for approval. All submissions will be subject to submission checks and initial consideration for desk rejection before they are assigned to Associate Editors. It is expected that Associate Editors will handle 20 papers per year to acceptance.

The appointment of Associate Editors will give consideration to topic, methodological and geographical coverage. Gender balance will also be a primary consideration in appointing Associate Editors.

It is expected that Associate Editors will handle 20 papers per year to acceptance.

Associate Editor major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Receive manuscripts assigned to them and handle all editorial processes through to rejection or recommendation of acceptance, to be approved by the Editor-in-Chief;
  • Solicit high-quality manuscripts from potential authors.
  • Work collaboratively with the Editor-in-Chief by providing feedback and strategic suggestion during meetings and/or throughout the year.
  • Attend occasional virtual meetings with the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Promote circulation and online usage within your network and recommend the Journal to your institution or librarian if they do not subscribe already.
  • Promote the journal via social media channels;
  • Champion Open Access: Open Research is an important part of academic publishing and will increase usage, citations, and visibility of the content.
  • Contribute to the vision for the direction of Journal of Sustainable Tourism that aligns with the mission of the journal.

Submitting Your Application

You are invited to submit an expression of interest. Expressions of interest need only take the form of an email or brief letter to Prof. Xavier Font ([email protected]) or Prof. James Higham ([email protected]). Both Xavier and James are available for informal conversations about the role. Expressions of interest close on Monday 30th August 2021.

Candidates will then be shortlisted for interviews which will begin on Monday 6th September. Given the geography involved, interviews will take the form of a Zoom interview and include an independent senior colleague and a representative from the journal’s publisher (Routledge Taylor and Francis). Notification of the appointment of Associate Editors will follow on Monday 13th September.

We are confident that this process will result in the appointment of Associated Editors who will work closely with Xavier, and that the new structure will allow us all to continue to build the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, in ways that are in keeping with the values and aims of the journal.

The Journal of Sustainable Tourism is a leading tourism journal which advances critical understanding of the relationships between tourism and sustainable development. It publishes theoretical, conceptual and empirical research that explores one or more of the economic, social, cultural, political, organizational or environmental aspects of the subject. Critical views and perspectives are encouraged, as well as new ideas and approaches in relation to the theory and practice linking tourism and sustainability. Contributions can be from all disciplinary perspectives, with inter-disciplinary work especially welcome. Holistic and integrative work is encouraged. All geographical areas are included, as are all forms of tourism, both mass and niche market. Papers can be especially useful if they contribute new understanding and insights not just to the field of sustainable tourism but also to the wider social sciences or between the social and natural sciences. Many contributions include significant empirical evidence, but some innovate in the field by providing new perspectives, approaches and insights through critical reviews. The journal publishes Main Papers, Book Reviews, and occasional Opinion Pieces. Book reviews and Opinion Pieces are by invitation only. We also commission Special Issues – contact the editors if you have a proposal for a Special Issue or Opinion Piece.
