Meet the Editor

We sat down with our new Editor-In-Chief, Yong Sik Ok, to ask a few questions about
Sustainable Environment, including his plans for the journal and what it can do for authors looking to publish their Environmental Science research.

Here is what he had to say.

As the new Editor-in-Chief of Sustainable Environment, what are your plans for the journal?

Sustainable Environmentis a multidisciplinary open access journal, publishing peer-reviewed research across the full scope of environmental science: from ecology to energy and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). We offer authors a fast and affordable option for the publication of their work – including research articles, reviews, sustainability report (industries) and short communications – and publishing open access ensures it will be shared with a global audience to maximise its reach and impact.

We consider original research articles, reviews, sustainability report (industries) and substantive policy papers in Sustainability Management aligned with the UN SDGs. In addition, environmental pillar metrics aligned with ESG will be included in the scope which includes

1) Emissions and carbon footprint

2) Energy, resource and water use / intensity

3) Ecology and biodiversity

4) Waste management and output

5) Renewable energy and climate mitigation.

Which topics are you most interested to cover in the journal?

Sustainable Environmentwill publish, among other things, sustainability reports from industries to address some of UN SDGs. For instance, a company’s environmental policies might contribute to water pollution or energy waste. As a result, the company’s costs, its reputation and its regulatory compliance could be at risk. In addition, environmental pillar metrics aligned with ESG will be included in the new scope, which includes:

• Emissions and carbon footprint

• Energy, resource and water use / intensity

Ecology and biodiversity

• Waste management and output

• Renewable energy and climate mitigation

What are the current challenges facing the research community?

Sustainable Environmentwill deal with state-of-the-art technologies, advanced strategies, and political issues pertaining to sustainability of our environment. It’s a timely opportunity for knowledge exchange among professionals from all over the world, and will actively feed into ongoing policy discourse. By bringing together international experts, policymakers, and local communities, we believe the journal will play a vital role in helping to achieve the UN SDGs.

What is different about the ethos that sets Sustainable Environment apart from other journals?

Sustainable Environmentis a unique journal which deals with UN SDGs and ESG under the sustainability goals. The journal has a fast publication process on a state-of-the-art platform, with immediate free access given to all published articles anywhere in the world.

What would your advice be to early career researchers and/or students?

Throughout my career as a professor the last 15 years, I have been constantly reading the latest papers and dissertations without having a single day off, whilst analyzing the results of the experiments and writing papers with my lab students. As a researcher, I believe that maintaining research activities and life routines is the most essential part in all situations, especially for early career researchers and graduate students

For the last 10 years, I have been around in different universities around the world as a professor, in countries like Germany, Australia, Belgium and China for at least a month up to a year. Also, I have been participating in collaboration research in different countries, which includes: Germany, Canada, Belgium, Australia, Singapore, and the U.S., and still continue to host a minimum of 5 online meetings a week during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In fact, currently, I am organizing international conferences in my field along with my students with 300 different scholars from 30 different countries around the world. I believe that when I trust in my abilities and choices in learning and constantly devote myself to performing experiments and writing dissertations, these academic achievements can be recognized all over the world. Work hard and create your own professional network globally.
