Sustainability knowledge management and organisational learning
This special issue will include theoretical and empirical papers exploring the link between knowledge management (Ruhanen & Cooper, 2004), organisational learning (Huber, 1991) and the sustainability challenges being faced by organisations, individuals and society (Martinez-Martinez, Cegarra-Navarro, Garcia-Perez, & Wensley, 2019). Sustainability knowledge –that is, individual and organisations’ understanding of the things and objects in the environment (Adams & Lamont, 2003; Lee, 2010), has become one of the most important resources for organisations in the current competitive environment. Sustainability knowledge can be better understood as the degree to which an individual or organisation becomes aware of and concerned with ecological and socio-cultural issues (Boiral, 2002). The concept may be thought of as comprising stocks of data, information and knowledge resources, described in the literature as sustainability memories, which have been gathered and accumulated by using the organisational knowledge structures and organisational learning processes.
Organisations need to turn their knowledge into agile structures to respond to the challenges resulting from current and future sustainability challenges, and from increased competitiveness and social changes (Rogers, 2012; Vihari, Rao, & Doliya, 2019). It is therefore important for business decision-making processes to be based on sustainability knowledge instead of relying on unconfirmed, often biased information (Li, Li, McCabe, & Xu, 2019). In this vein, reliable knowledge structures and a framework become an imperative for sustainable development (Butowski, 2019; Font, Higham, Miller, & Pourfakhimi, 2019; Hall, 2019; Kim, Kim, & Thapa, 2018). Development of these innovations shall be addressed through systematic mechanisms such as integration of sustainability issues, attention to technological innovation, improved absorptive capacity, targeting social challenges as well as investment in human resource development (Hair Awang, Yusof Hussain, & Abdul Malek, 2013).
This special issue seeks to contribute to the emerging body of work on this domain by publishing paper reporting research and empirical work that address topics including –but not limited to, the following:
- Sustainability knowledge, environmental intellectual capital and eco-innovation
- Sustainability knowledge management and social challenges
- Sustainability knowledge strategy
- Knowledge agents as drivers of sustainability
- (un)learning structures for organizational sustainability
- Absorption capacity of environmental knowledge
- Knowledge management and sustainable business models
- Sustainability organisational learning
- Sustainability knowledge and linking business and social performances
Expressions of interest/extended abstract due: February 15, 2020.
Invitations to submit full papers: before September 15, 2020.
Anticipated special issue publication early 2021 (note that early submissions are welcome and if accepted will be available online well before the full special issue is published).
Expressions of interest are welcome in the form of an extended abstract (1800 words excluding references), to be sent to co-editors, Aurora Martínez-Martínez (email@example.com), Juan Gabriel Cegarra-Navarro (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Alexeis Garcia-Perez (email@example.com). Abstracts should include the title, authorship, author affiliation(s) and contact information (including the email addresses of all authors) and keywords (maximum six).
Editors welcome contributions from researchers and practitioners from around the world to contribute manuscripts for the special issue. Contributors have to follow the Journal’s Instructions for Authors.

All full paper submissions will be subject to the normal peer review processes of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.
