The Journal of Sustainable Tourism is a leading tourism journal which advances critical understanding of the relationships between tourism and sustainable development.
The aim of this special issue is to advance the tourism industry’s contribution to meeting the Sustainable Development Goal 12 of responsible consumption and production.
Individuals’ unsustainable consumption behaviors are indisputably significant triggers of negative environmental, social, cultural, and economic impacts across the globe. Understanding the antecedents, mediators and consequences of sustainable behavior is essential for the tourism and hospitality industries to design new strategies to substantially reduce the negative impacts of tourism. However research needs to move beyond using the theory of planned behavior to measure behavioral intentions, and to seek alternative theoretical frameworks to explain and to experiment with behavior change.
The scope of this special issue includes diverse (un)sustainable consumptions, productions, and consumer behaviors in any sector of the tourism and hospitality industry. Articles reporting progress on industry, NGOs and the public sector collaborations to promote behavior change are particularly welcomed. The guest editor encourages a range of quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches, including but not limited to experimental/quasi-experimental designs, longitudinal studies, surveys, case studies, mixed methods, interviews, meta analyses, big data research, and content analysis.
Themes for consideration for this special issue include but are not limited to:
- Barriers of sustainable consumption
- Changing unsustainable habits and promoting behavioral change
- Closing the attitude-behavior gap between behavioral intentions and actual behavior
- Economic impacts of environmentally and socially unsustainable behavior
- Behavioral economics, sociology or psychology perspectives on (un)sustainable tourist behavior
- Methods to measure sustainability behavior
- New theory development and theory broadening/deepening on the reasons for sustainable/unsustainable consumption
- Human-centered and user-centered sustainable product design
- Green atmospherics and consumer well-being/mental health
Abstract submission due: September 30th, 2019 (earlier submission is encouraged)
Expressions of interest in contributing a paper to this special issue are invited in the form of a working title and 450-500 words abstract of your proposed paper by September 30th, 2019, to be submitted by e-mail to: email@example.com
Abstracts should include the title, authorship, author affiliation(s) and contact information (including the email addresses of all authors) and keywords (maximum six).
Authors will be notified of the outcome by October 31st, 2019.
Full paper submission due: May 31st, 2020 (earlier submission is encouraged)
Full papers will be invited following abstract review. The deadline for the submission of full papers will be May 31st, 2020.
The special issue is scheduled to be published in the middle/end of 2021.
