In Search of Green Jobs – Voices of (Unheard) Young People and Their Aspirations, Barriers, and Negotiations with Work in Africa

Across Africa, millions of young people are navigating the twin challenges of unemployment and climate change. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that nearly 21 per cent of the continent’s youth is neither in employment, education, nor training (ILO 2024). At the same time, the green transition offers immense potential for countries in Africa.

Invitation

We invite submissions that engage with the theme of young people (15-35 years) and green jobs and skills in Africa, with a particular focus on the voices of young people (especially those from marginalised and disadvantaged backgrounds whose voices are often not heard). Examples of areas of focus for papers could include one or more of the following (but is not limited to this):

  • Young People in Just Transitions
  • Gender and Green Jobs
  • The role of skills and education in green pathways for young people
  • Youth voices and green jobs
  • Aspirations, perceptions and meaning of (green) jobs to young people

Within these topics, papers might consider:

  • Researching with young people
  • Conceptual debates around green jobs
