Waste Management Problems in Agro-Industries: Innovative and Sustainable Solutions (AGRO 2025)

“Agro industries” define common scientific framework for a significant group of industrial activities based on agricultural means and products, covering a number of major industries including textile, leather, food, sugar, edible oil, beverages and pulp and paper. The concept of waste management has greatly improved with outstanding achievements in the understanding of wastewater characteristics and interpretation of biological, physical, chemical and hybrid processes. Over the last decade, major innovations in waste management directed the focus on resource recovery and reuse, waste to energy concept as well as treatment of persistent organic pollutants. In this context, complex structure of agro waste/wastewater coupled with high energy demand requires sophisticated and multifaceted treatment approach as well as case-specific solutions. The increasing need for resource recovery, reuse options, pollution control and waste management in agro-industries has been a central focus for researchers and industry professionals. Tackling these challenges calls for innovative solutions that combine emerging technologies with conventional methods through an integrative approach.

The IWA Agro Symposium series started in 1989 with its first event; “First International Symposium on Waste Management Problems in Agro-Industries” held in İstanbul, Türkiye. With each new conference, the number of attendees, contributors and followers has grown into a series of outstanding IAWQ symposia organized in several countries including Mexico, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Greece, and Poland, over the last 35 years. The upcoming Agro’2025 symposium in İstanbul, Türkiye, will be the twelfth in this series of regular scientific events organized under the same umbrella. The symposium covers a wide range of topics, from conventional physico-chemical and biological treatment applications to climate change mitigation and adaptation with particular interest in the focus on the circular economy, life cycle assessment, resource recovery, and waste valorization applications within the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus.

This aim of this special issue "Waste Management Problems in Agro-Industries-Innovative and Sustainable Solutions-AGRO 2025" is to address all waste management issues in Agro-industries in an inclusive manner as well as to provide a platform for scientists to present their studies focused on these challenging issues. The special issue will accept original and novel scientific work on the development of best available treatment technologies and production-integrated measures for pollution abatement, as well as the exploration of reuse and recovery practices that ensure the reduction of treatment requirements and the accomplishment of sustainability targets in line with other circular concepts, such as green production and eco-labelling. Potential topics include the following:

  • Biological treatment of wastewaters and wastes
  • Chemical treatment of wastewaters and wastes
  • Nutrient removal and recovery
  • Resources recovery and reuse
  • Advanced treatment processes and innovative technological applications
  • Modelling and design interaction
  • Sludge stabilization, utilization and disposal
  • Treatment and use of waste from stockbreeding
  • Run-off and control of pollutants from agricultural areas
  • Innovative water and waste management system for agricultural area
  • The climate change mitigation and adaptation in agro-industries
  • Soil pollution and management
  • Innovative solutions for wastewater reuse
  • Sustainable production of bioactives (bio-char, bio-oil, bio-gas)
  • Trends and challenges of by-product utilization in agro-industries
  • Life-Cycle Assessment in agro-Industries
  • Sustainable valorisation strategies of agro-wastes
  • Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus in agro-industries
  • Circular economy for agro-Industries
  • Impacts of carbon border adjustment mechanism on agro-industries
  • Fate and transport of micropollutants
  • European Green Deal in agro-industries
  • Sustainable nitrogen management in agriculture and agro-industries
