Vaccines’ present and future contribution to tackle antibiotic resistance spread and evolution in humans

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will continue to be one of the biggest challenges to public health in the coming decades. Antibiotic overuse has led to the emergence of multidrug resistant pathogens causing diseases that cannot be managed with current treatment options. Present and future vaccines will undoubtedly play a major role in tackling AMR and reducing antibiotic use. In this Special Issue we solicit articles that address:

  • Scientific rationale for vaccines and vaccinations counteracting AMR
  • Available evidence and potential for existing vaccines to reduce antibiotic prescription
  • Modelling the impact of present and future vaccines on AMR containment
  • Economic and cost-effectiveness aspects of present and future vaccines for combating AMR
  • New vaccines in development toward antibiotic resistant bacterial species
