Cooperative and Competitive Multimodal Transportation Systems

The increasing interconnectedness and complexity of urban transportation systems have led to the development and integration of various multimodal transportation services, such as public transit, ride-hailing, ride-pooling, carsharing, e-scooters, shared bikes, etc. These services involve multiple service providers, both public and private, working together or competing against each other to deliver efficient, reliable, and sustainable transportation options to the public. As urban populations continue to grow and the demand for seamless and integrated travel experiences increases, understanding the cooperative and competitive interactions between different mobility services in multimodal transportation systems is crucial for promoting efficiency, equity, and sustainability in future mobility ecosystems. Furthermore, evaluating the impacts of these interactions on service quality, accessibility, affordability, and environmental outcomes is essential for designing effective policies and practices that balance the interests of various stakeholders, including service providers, users, and regulators.

This special issue invites contributions that address the research problems related to cooperative and competitive interactions between multiple mobility services in multimodal transportation systems. Works with significant theoretical, practical, or methodological implications are most welcome.

The subject areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Analysis of cooperative strategies between service providers in multimodal transportation networks to improve system efficiency, resilience, and user satisfaction;
  • Examination of competitive interactions among service providers and their impact on service quality, accessibility, and affordability;
  • Integration of emerging transportation services (e.g., ride-sourcing, carsharing, micro-mobility) with traditional public transit systems to enhance multimodal connectivity and accessibility;
  • Evaluation of public policies and regulatory frameworks for fostering cooperation and/or competition among service providers in multimodal transportation systems;
  • Design of innovative business models, pricing strategies, and revenue-sharing mechanisms for cooperative and competitive transportation service providers;
  • Data-driven approaches for understanding and optimizing the interactions between multiple service providers in multimodal transportation systems;
  • Assessment of the social, environmental, and economic impacts of cooperative and competitive interactions between service providers in multimodal transportation systems.
