Transport Infrastructure Development and Travel Behaviour Change
Planning and construction of large-scale public transport infrastructure and increased investment in road and pedestrian infrastructure can significantly impact on people’s travel behaviour and change individual travel decisions. The development of active travel infrastructure (increasingly important with the growth in micromobility) and public transport infrastructure is already proven as an effective strategy in urban and transport planning to improve the liveability, sustainability, and accessibility of cities. Well-planned and high-quality active and public transport infrastructure that induces travel behaviour change has positive implications for economic, environmental, social, and health development. For example, high-quality public transport systems contribute to enhancing job accessibility and reducing travel-related energy use and carbon dioxide emissions, while an increase in the use of active modes may reduce the risk of some chronic diseases. However, the impacts of building new transport infrastructure on travel behaviour may vary in different geographical and economic contexts. The relationships between transport infrastructure development and travel behaviour change in different social groups (e.g. income, age and gender groups) are also worthy of investigation.
This special issue invites submissions of articles that contribute to a better understanding of transport-related infrastructure development and travel behaviour change, and the associated impacts on economic, environmental, social and health development. Suitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- The relationship between planning for active transport infrastructure and travel behaviour change and the implications for public health
- The impact of large-scale public transport infrastructure (such as urban railway systems and high-speed railway) on travel behaviour and the implications for transport energy use and climate change
- Transport infrastructure development and travel behaviour change in different social groups (such as age and income groups)
- Emerging technologies to support transport infrastructure-induced travel behaviour
- Massive investment in new transport infrastructure and the resultant shift in the travel modal split – how important is project scale?
- The relationship between public transport accessibility and travel behaviour and the implications of transport-related infrastructure development for social equity
- The impact of new transport infrastructure on travel behaviour in different land use patterns and urban forms (e.g. pedestrian precincts, TODs etc).
