Trans Reproductive and Sexual Health

There is increasing recognition that trans people face multiple obstacles to accessing quality reproductive and sexual healthcare. This contributes to significant disparities in sexual and reproductive health outcomes for trans people. In light of this, Women’s Reproductive Health is launching a special issue on Trans Reproductive and Sexual Health.

Within a trans reproductive and sexual justice lens this special issue aims to enhance knowledge of the constructions, experiences and sexual and reproductive healthcare needs of trans people. Reproductive and sexual justice focuses on how societies and services may not be inclusive of the needs of trans people and how cisgenderism shapes experiences of reproductive and sexual rights. Currently, reproductive and sexual rights often fail to speak to the needs of trans people, conceptualising trans people as an ‘add on’ to an existing cisgenderist logic. It is for these reasons that a trans reproductive and sexual justice approach is vital.

This special issue aims to collect novel contributions topics such as:

  • Pregnancy
  • Parenthood and the desire for parenthood
  • Fertility and infertility
  • Fertility preservation
  • Chest feeding and lactation support
  • Reproductive technologies
  • Reproductive rights and justice
  • Contraception
  • Miscarriage and stillbirth
  • Menarche and Menstruation
  • Interactions with reproductive and sexual health care professionals
  • Sexual health
  • Cancer screening (e.g. cervical)
