Time-delay Systems and their Applications

Motivations and Aims

Boosted by the advanced developments of network communication technologies, modern control systems have made considerable progress and have been playing core roles in most applications, such as unmanned surface vehicles, unmanned space vehicles, smart grids, wastewater treatment processes, internet-based teleoperation, artificial intelligence and intelligent transportation systems. However, time-delays are unavoidable in a control system when network communication is involved due to limited network bandwidth. Time-delays usually affect the inner dynamics of a control system. Investigating the effects of time-delays on modern control systems is clearly a significant research topic.

On the other hand, in the last decade, great progress has been made on time-delay systems. A novel result contributes to the Bessel-Legendre inequality (BLI) proposed in 2015. With the BLI, a new stability criterion can be derived from a polynomial inequality, which has been proven to be less conservative. However, due to the special properties (say, the time derivative equals to one) of time-delays induced from network communication, it is a very challenging issue how to apply those new developments on time-delay systems to modern industrial control systems to disclose both the positive and negative effects of time-delays on the system performance. Moreover, it is also difficult to design suitable controllers, protocols, and state estimators to counter those negative effects of time-delays on control systems.

The aim of this special issue is to advance the time-delay system methods and further promote the research activities in estimation and control of industrial control systems. Specifically, this special issue is targeting at original works to address some emerging issues and challenges from time-delays systems and their applications to modern industrial control systems, such as multiagent (distributed) systems, unmanned surface vehicles, unmanned space vehicles, power systems, smart grids, offshore platforms, intelligent transportation control and robotics.

Scope

The list of possible topics includes, but is not limited to:

  • Control design for control systems using recent developments on time-delay systems
  • Investigating effects of time-delays on control systems subject to cyber-attacks
  • Control protocols for multi-agent systems subject to time-varying delays in communication channels
  • Global asymptotic stability and state estimation on neural networks with time-varying delays
  • Studying the effects of time-delays on consensus and formation of multiagent systems
  • Applications of time-delay system approaches in smart grid, wireless robotics, offshore platforms, repetitive control, and some other control systems

Submission Instructions

Authors should prepare their manuscripts according to the "Instructions for Authors" guidelines of “International Journal of Systems Science” outlined at the journal website https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tsys. All papers will be peer-reviewed following a regular reviewing procedure. Each submission should clearly demonstrate evidence of benefits to society or large communities. Originality and impact on society, in combination with a media-related focus and innovative technical aspects of the proposed solutions will be the major evaluation criteria.
