Technological Innovation and Climate Change Mitigation Agenda: Implications for Environmental Sustainability

Background

Climate change mitigation is one of the most critical and existential challenges confronting human civilization since it is a complicated and long-standing concern. The United Nations Climate Action goal provides a platform for accommodating measures impeding the climatic adversities at local, national, and global levels. In this regard, initiatives such as Paris Climate Conference contribute to guiding and motivating the global economies to mitigate climate change to keep the earth temperature between 1.5 - 2°C over pre-industrial levels. To this end, technological innovation has been considered to manifest the breakthrough in downscaling environmental emissions.

There is now widespread agreement that the post-COVID economic recovery should be green. The global economy is currently confronting a new wave of protectionism, trade wars, high levels of leverage in both the private and public sectors of developed and developing economies, post COVID-19, financial innovation and disruptive technologies, and threats to economic and financial stability posed by climate change. Nonetheless, our understanding of these concerns is very limited, posing a barrier to developing long-term strategies capable of safeguarding the global economy and environment. Besides, the costs and benefits of climate change are unfairly distributed, both in time and between countries. In this respect, we must recognize how the climate is changing and devise strategies to mitigate, relieve, or adapt to it to enhance environmental sustainability.
