Re-imagining teaching, learning, and well-being amidst the COVID-19 pandemic: Challenges, opportunities, and recommendations

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has wrought significant challenges to not only teaching and learning but also to overall psychological well-being. Studies have shown severe learning losses during the pandemic (Kuhfield et al., 2020) and a surge in well-being problems among teachers and students (Chaturvedi et al., 2021; Pressley, 2021).

The COVID-19 pandemic presents the largest educational disruption in recent memory. School closures have been implemented in almost every country upending the learning and teaching experiences of more than 1.7 billion students and their families spread over 188 countries (OECD, 2020). Its impact is felt from compulsory to higher education necessitating students, teachers, and educational practitioners to re-imagine education during the new normal.

In this special issue, contributors will discuss the challenges that teachers and students face during the COVID-19 pandemic, identify the opportunities for adapting to the longer-term challenges of the pandemic, propose recommendations for educational systems currently grappling with the pandemic, and imagine the implications for a post-COVID world.
