Sustainability in Social Work Practice
Scope
We invite abstracts on proposed papers for a themed special issue of the journal on Sustainability in Social Work Practice.
The relationship between sustainability and social work is complex and multifaceted. In recent years, the social work profession has been affected by a number of factors, including increasing demands placed upon practitioners due to more complex societal needs and issues (Murphy, 2023; Webb and Bywaters, 2018). These increasing demands are situated within a global context of the climate crisis and its unequal impacts, underpinned by, amongst other factors, poverty, displacement and colonisation, capitalism and greed (Fitzpatrick, Chapman and Harding, 2024; Jones et al, 2025).
It is more pressing than ever that as a profession and as a discipline, we examine sustainability in social work practice as it affects our relationships with people with lived experience, colleagues, educators and society more broadly.
This special issue contributes to a new way of thinking about sustainability and social work practice. It considers a broad conceptualisation of the term sustainability, drawing together different ideas of what sustainability can mean both for and within social work practice (Boetto, 2016).
Themes and topics
Some examples of relevant thematic areas include:
- Sustainability in the environmental sense of the word – including how social work practice impacts and is impacted by the climate crisis, and supporting people affected by climate change, including those experiencing disasters.
- Sustainable social work practice – developments in how practice is sustained in the broader cultural or temporal sense. This may include engagement with students, people with lived experience, colleagues, educators, practitioners, and policymakers.
- Social sustainability – thinking about work with specific communities and social justice-oriented practice, as well as community development.
- Organisational and/or personal sustainability – concerning staff wellbeing, resilience and retention, and strategies used by social work employers and organisations to support these things.
- Decolonisation and sustainability – giving recognition to global issues and international social work perspectives on sustainability, and foregrounding approaches and challenges to sustainability in, and from, the global south.
We would particularly encourage papers co-authored with students, people with lived experience of using services, and social work practitioners.
We would also invite social work practitioners to consider submitting abstract proposals for shorter Perspective Pieces (see below for details).
Submission Instructions
Abstract proposal instructions for consideration in the Special Issue
Abstract proposals not exceeding 800 words in length should be sent by email to Lindsay Giddings (Lindsay.giddings@open.ac.uk) and Dr Shirley Boyle (Shirley.boyle@open.ac.uk) no later than Monday, 13 October 2025. Authors will be notified of the decision on acceptance by the end of October 2025.
Please ensure that your email subject line reads "Abstract Submission for Special Edition" and that you include your full name and contact email in your abstract submission. Clearly indicate whether your abstract is intended for a Full Article or a Perspectives Piece, keeping in mind the differences between these article types as described below.
Submission process if your abstract is selected
If your abstract is chosen for full paper submission, you should submit your full article by Monday, 2 February 2026. Full paper submissions need to be submitted via the journal’s submission portal and must adhere to the journal’s submission guidelines, which can be found here and include formatting and citation requirements. All papers will go through the usual peer review process, and a final decision on acceptance in the Special Issue is anticipated no later than Friday, 30 October 2026.
Full paper submissions will either be Full Articles or Perspectives Pieces.
Full Articles are up to 6,000 words in length, including references, and can be based on original empirical research relating to sustainability and social work practice; or they may be theoretical or conceptual articles relating to sustainability and social work practice; or they may be a review of research evidence and/or policy relating to sustainability and social work practice.
Perspectives Pieces are up to 2,500 words in length, including references. These shorter pieces may focus on a smaller tranche of data relating to sustainability and social work practice within a larger empirical research study; they may be shorter conceptual or research review pieces related to sustainability and social work practice; or they may speak to innovative initiatives to promote sustainability within your or others social work practice, and/or within your social work organisation. While it is not expected that these submissions will reference an extensive range of literature, authors are still expected to ground these submissions in relevant existing literature and adhere to the journal’s other guidelines.
For any inquiries about the special issue, submissions, or reviewer opportunities, please contact: Lindsay Giddings (Lindsay.giddings@open.ac.uk) and Dr Shirley Boyle (Shirley.boyle@open.ac.uk)
