Sustainable Plastic Waste Management to Mitigate Marine Plastic Pollution

Waste management is experiencing unprecedented disruption during the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic (You et al. 2020). Marine plastic pollution emerges as a global environmental problem and sustainable plastic waste management is critical to fulfilling the UN Sustainable Development Goals (You et al., 2020). The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic poses a major threat to the success of plastic pollution mitigation worldwide. This SI covers original research and review articles on recent development in plastic waste management and scientific understanding of the sources and status of marine plastic pollution. Topics include but are not limited to new technological development, system optimization, life cycle assessment, cost-benefit analysis, material flow analysis, logistics analysis, experimental analysis of marine plastic pollution, ecological impacts of marine plastic pollution, and policy discussion. Researches about the impacts of COVID-19 on plastic waste management and marine plastic pollution are particularly welcome.
