Comprehensive Evaluation and Spatio-temporal analysis of Surface Energy Budget Datasets

Surface energy budget plays a central role in Earth system. Spatio-termporal variations in the surface energy budget affect not only the thermal conditions on the planet, but also various other climate elements, such as atmospheric and oceanic circulations, the components of the hydrological cycle, glaciers, plant productivity, terrestrial carbon uptake, and so on.

Over the past several decades, technological advances in remote sensing, modern numerical weather modelling and assimilation have provided an unprecedented wealth of data sets relevant to surface energy budget over global. However, the discrepancies among various datasets at global, particularly the substantial uncertainties quantification and their mechanisms at various tempo-spatial scales, have not been explored thoroughly in previous studies, and even the magnitude in the components of surface energy budget is currently debated. Therefore, further progress is required for comprehensive evaluation of these datasets in terms of improving retrieval accuracy, refining modelling approaches, and better knowledge of surface energy budget and its distribution within Earth system.

Along these lines, this special issue on “Comprehensive Evaluation and Spatio-temporal Analysis of Surface Energy Budget Datasets” in the International Journal of Digital Earth aims to capture recent advancements in comparison and evaluation and spatio-temporal analysis of surface radiative energy budget datasets regarding of a variety of components, such as shortwave/longwave radiation, all-wave net radiation, albedo, latent/sensible heat flux, and surface temperature. Specifically, original unpublished research articles on this topic are warmly welcomed.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

  1. Data validation and analysis between in situ observations and surface energy budget products
  2. Data algorithm and validation of surface energy budget products
  3. Spatio-temporal analysis and comparison for surface energy budget products
  4. Uncertainty quantification and its sources analysis of various products
  5. Comparison of numerical simulations and satellite products
  6. Analysis of the discrepancies in surface energy budget between various products

Submission Instructions

The International Journal of Digital Earth is an Open Access and international peer-reviewed academic journal (SCIE with a 2020 impact factor 3.538) focusing on the theories, technologies, applications, and societal implications of Digital Earth and those visionary concepts that will enable a modeled virtual world.

Submissions must follow the instructions to authors outlined on the Taylor & Francis author guidelines page for International Journal of Digital Earth. Word templates are available on the web site and papers are typically 5000‐8000 words in length.

Papers should be submitted online at the International Journal of Digital Earth's Manuscript Central Site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.
