Daoist Visual and Material Cultures: History, Ritual, and Body

Studies in Chinese Religions, sponsored by the Institute for World Religions at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and published by the Taylor & Francis Group (Routledge), is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing high-quality, original research on Chinese religions. The journal appears in print and online on a quarterly basis.

This special issue, “Daoist Visual and Material Cultures: History, Ritual, and Body,” will bring the emerging discourse on Daoist visual and material culture into concert with theories of history, ritual, and body. It seeks multidisciplinary perspectives on the relationship between images and practices throughout any period of Daoist histories. This issue aims to show how the study of Daoism further contributes to ongoing discussions of images, objects, and the body within the broader Humanities. Areas of interest for this special journal issue include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Daoist Visual and Material Cultures
  • Ritual objects
  • Discourse on images in Daoist histories
  • Daoist conceptualizations of the body
  • Material expressions of efficacy
  • Art and practice
