SPECIAL ISSUE JFA 50TH ANNIVERSARY: Environmental Archaeology in the Field

For this special issue we invite papers ranging from protocols, best practices to position papers about the changing role of environmental archaeologists in the field. We also welcome discussions of environmental archaeologists within community-based heritage projects. We invite a global range of perspectives, specialisations, regional case studies, themes, and periods that are of interest to a wide audience of field archaeologists as well as diverse environmental archaeologists, including (but not limited to) archaeozoology, archaeobotany and geoarchaeology. We aim to tackle situational Anthropocenes, and invite the community of environmental archaeologists to discuss how they see themselves especially in relation to being in the field, in diverse social, political, ecological situations, at times in relative isolation, and sometimes in service of heritage rescue operations. JFA provides innovative options to publish visual / 3D data & the brand new photo essay formats that are both appealing and useful as we enter the second quarter of the 21st century.

Authors are encouraged to discuss format options with the corresponding guest editor. Included in the possible formats are the following (and please e-mail if you have other concepts):

-Opinion pieces, manifestos, collective pieces

-Significant regional histories, evolution of the field, especially highlighting the collaboration between environmental archaeology and fieldwork projects

-Protocols (with ample photos and videos)

-Photo essays (JFA´s new exciting format)

-New methods of environmental archaeology (especially advancing information recovery in the field)

-Challenges of environmental archaeological analysis during fieldwork (e.g. lack of reference collections) and overcoming these challenges

-Reviews of legal situations and how they are applied locally (globally comparative reviews are most welcome too!)

-Ethnographic fieldwork for Environmental Archaeology

-Narratives of and approaches to community-engaged projects, including environmental archaeology in the field

-Papers on the meaning and use of environmental archaeology beyond specialists, environmental archaeology talking beyond specialisations
