South Asian Englishes: From theory to the classroom
This special issue of South Asian Englishes titled South Asian Englishes: From theory to the classroom aims to provide space for empirical research from South Asian classrooms and teacher education contexts attending to pedagogical implications of the spread of South Asian Englishes. In particular, this special issue seeks to bring together research that epistemologically recognizes the inherent diversity, complexity and hybridity (Kachru, 1986) characterizing South Asian Englishes, and is "not simply concerned with English as a transported and/or localized linguistic system” (Bolton, 2018, p. 17). Papers that recognise South Asian Englishes as “sites of multilingual contact, creativity, hybridization, code-switching and mixing, and a range of related processes" (Bolton, 2018, p. 17), and thus destabilise monolithic and stable approaches to South Asian Englishes, are therefore encouraged.
Manuscripts that adopt qualitative and quantitative approaches and use diverse and innovative data collection tools are encouraged.
Topics for exploration may include (but are not limited to):
- Pedagogical innovations informed by world/South Asian Englishes
- South Asian Englishes in teacher preparation and teacher professional development
- South Asian Englishes and teacher/teacher educator/student identities
- Integration of South Asian Englishes in curriculum and material development
- South Asian Englishes across the curriculum
- Assessment of South Asian Englishes
- Studies conducted in primary, secondary, tertiary, formal and non-formal, and teacher education contexts.
