Smart Mobility for Heterogeneous Traffic

Existing urban transport systems are facing massive and adverse social and economic impacts due to congestion, accidents, pollution, energy inefficiency, and unreliability. This is particularly true under heterogeneous traffic conditions, which involve traffic interactions among several classes of vehicles with widely varying static and dynamic characteristics. This could lead to very different traffic flow characteristics.

The last few decades have seen significant technological strides in every facet of science and engineering related to mobility of people and goods. Developments in the various fields of information technology and telecommunications have contributed to the deployment of the well-known Intelligent Transportation Systems.  Rapid and pervasive technological advances offer new opportunities in the form of new vehicular and sensor technologies, connected and real-time data, and disruptive models of transportation services and operation.  This special issue focuses on related topics on smart mobility under heterogeneous traffic conditions. Specific topics of interest include, but not limited to:

  • Applications of novel technologies, e.g.
    • Sensors and actuators
    • Vision and Image Processing
    • AI powered smart mobility solutions
    • Connected Vehicle (CV) technologies
    • Augmented and Virtual Reality
  • Development and use of innovative applications and systems
    • Safety and security systems
    • Smart traffic system operations
    • Big Data Analytics for Intelligent Transportation
    • Public Transportation Management
    • Traffic Theory, Modeling, and Simulation for smart mobility
    • Urban Mobility and Multimodal Transportation
    • Congestion Management and Avoidance
    • Freight Transport Modeling
