Smart Cement-Based Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure
Smart cement-based materials are emerging as a transformative evolution in construction materials, merging traditional structural functions with advanced capabilities for sensing, adapting, and responding to environmental and structural stimuli. These materials not only fulfill conventional structural roles but also integrate diverse intelligent features such as self-sensing, self-healing, self-cleaning, energy-storage and energy-harvesting capacities. The diverse intelligent features open up wide possibilities for next-generation infrastructure, e.g., real-time structural health monitoring, autonomous crack repair, maintaining cleanliness in harsh environments, and energy-efficient building operation, offering significant advantages for improving the sustainability and resilience of infrastructure.
This special issue aims to highlight pioneering researches that advance the fundamental understanding of smart cement-based materials and explores their innovative design strategies, multifunctional performance, advanced modelling and simulation methods, and field applications, shaping the future of smart cement-based materials for intelligent infrastructure.
This special issue is also published in commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the founding of Tianjin University (Peiyang University), celebrating its long-standing contributions to academic excellence, research, and innovation.
