Journal of Earthquake Engineering

The objective of this special issue is to present current research and state-of-the-art on seismic design, simulation, and response evaluation of non-structural elements and systems (NSEs or NSES). Papers may focus on design, detailing, and assessment of individual classes of components (e.g. nonstructural walls, facades, piping and plumbing, ceiling systems, egress, and anchored equipment); or on generalized performance-based design and loss estimation procedures, component demands, characterization or qualification testing, and associated formalized code procedures.

Papers are sought that make meaningful contributions to new knowledge on any of the following subtopic areas:

• Simulation and analysis to assess demands to NSEs
• Studies to advance fundamental knowledge of dynamic structural/nonstructural interaction
• Design, detailing, and dynamic response of individual NSEs. Editors are especially interested in studies of low damage detailing, such as drift compatible detailing for drift sensitive components and isolation methods for acceleration sensitive components.
• Advanced/finite element simulation to characterize dynamic NSE behavior
• Learning from reconnaissance (damage to NSEs and its consequences)

To ensure that submissions fit the aims and scope of the special issue, and are meaningful contributions to the state of knowledge on NSEs, there will be an optional abstract submission. Authors are highly encouraged to submit an abstract for review by the guest editors prior to submission of the full manuscript. Abstracts shall be submitted by email to [email protected] with the subject line: “JEE Special Issue Abstract” no later than October 1, 2023; and shall include manuscript title, list of authors with affiliations, and abstract (up to 500 words). Abstract submissions will receive advisory feedback from the guest editors no later than November 1, 2023.

The expected timeline is 6 months for first review and author revision, and 3 months for a second review and revision, with final decisions on all manuscripts by March 1, 2025.
