Sediment Transport in Large Rivers

Sediment Transport in Large Rivers

Large rivers are the main corridors for transporting water and sediment from continents to oceans. They connect source regions, reservoirs, alluvial plains, estuaries and coasts, supporting navigation, hydropower, flood control, water supply, and ecosystems. Rapid climate change and increasing human activities in river basins are causing significant variations in flow and sediment regimes, as well as in morphology of large alluvial rivers. Improved understanding is essential for designing resilient river engineering, developing nature-based and hybrid approaches, and protecting ecological and environmental functions.

This article collection aims to bring together high-quality contributions that advance both qualitative and quantitative understandings of sediment transport and fluvial processes in large rivers, supported by state-of-the-art field observations, laboratory experiments, numerical modelling, data-driven methods and AI in river engineering. Submissions are welcome from a wider international community.

Submission Instructions

Each submission will undergo a formal review process similar to that of any other Journal of Hydraulic Research article submission.

During the submission process, select “Article Collection/Special Issue” – “Sediment Transport in Large Rivers” to ensure the submission is included in the Article Collection.

As soon as an individual paper is accepted, each manuscript will be published in a regular issue of the Journal of Hydraulic Research and will also be listed in a special Article Collection – “Sediment Transport in Large Rivers” on the journal website.

The submission deadline is June 30, 2026.

The review process will aim to be completed before October 31, 2026.

Relevant supplementary material is encouraged, e.g. video movies and video abstracts. More details can be found in: https://newsroom.taylorandfrancisgroup.com/taylor-and-francis-online-showcases-multimedia-content/

For enhanced impact and dissemination, contributors are encouraged to publish open access. Institutions participating in the T&F agreement to publish OA for free can be checked here: https://authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com/choose-open/publishing-open-access/oa-agreements/

IAHR will consider the organisation of an online event to promote the outcomes of this Article Collection.

Once the article is published, authors are encouraged to publicise their contribution to scientific and professional communities.
