Towards Inclusive Resilient Future for Nordic Tourism
Aim and scope of the special issue
An increase in the number of disasters and crises affecting the tourism industry globally has highlighted the significance of resilience building in the tourism industry. While tourism has been one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy in recent decades, it has been one of the sectors worst impacted during the COVID-19 crisis, for example. Furthermore, looming climate change and geopolitical shifts will have serious impacts on global and regional tourism patterns. While crisis management has been the major focus of research in tourism, the profound decline of tourism due to travel restrictions to combat the COVID-19 outbreak has brought forth and questioned the relationship between crisis and disaster management, and resilience. While the two concepts are inherently linked, extant research emphasizes the latter over the former.
Nordic tourism destinations have experienced significant changes over the last decades, which highlight the implementing adaptation strategies. Nevertheless, a relatively few studies have focused on the resilience of Nordic tourism destinations and businesses within Nordic tourism scholarship. In addition to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the region’s tourism industry is sensitive to the impacts of climate change, which will challenge both summer (e.g. algae blooming and sea-level rise) and winter tourism destinations (e.g. snow conditions and shifting seasonality). Therefore, in response to the growing significance of the resilience of tourism destinations, this special issue aims to offer a thorough exploration of resilience and help map out the current state of knowledge on resilience research within Nordic tourism scholarship. One potential element creating and maintaining resilience in a local scale relates to inclusive development models that highlight sustainable, collaborative and participatory approaches in tourism planning and development. In this respect, the key issues are focusing on those elements and conditions that would make tourism development more socio-economically and culturally inclusive and sustainable by creating opportunities for all and, thus, better resilience towards coming changes and shocks.
This special issue welcomes theoretical, empirical, experimental, and case study research contributions from a wide range of disciplinary and post-disciplinary perspectives. These contributions should clearly address the theoretical and practical implications of the research. The proposed topics may include but are not limited to the following:
- Resilience issues for tourism systems following crises and disasters
- Community-based decision-making for resilient destinations
- Participatory approaches to resilience policy making in tourism
- Inclusive resilience in tourism and vulnerable populations
- Biodiversity conservation, biosecurity and resilience
- Sustainability issues (e.g., practices and behaviours) for tourism systems following crises and disasters
- Tourist, employee, organizational, community and destination resilience
- Community resilience to spatio-cultural changes induced by tourism
- Social-ecological resilience and community-based tourism
- Critical perspectives to resilience in tourism
- Inclusions and exclusions in resilience building and governance
- Tourism destination response and recovery strategies
- New methods to study resilience in tourism
