Safety and Reliability

The US Federal Aviation Authority has now recommended that airlines should allow pilots to hand-fly during normal operations, whenever possible. Drivers of self-driving Ford cars are being allowed to take their hands off the steering wheel on motorways in some conditions. Autonomy is happening. This issue will explore what needs to be done to manage safety in a complex autonomous environment? How will humankind / society manage autonomous systems safely?

Papers are invited to discuss in a special edition of the SaRS Journal the pros and cons of automation in transport and defence, and other areas.
