Call for papers for the special feature of Journal of Forest Research
Ecological management of insular forests: conservation of endangered species and native ecosystems in Ryukyu Archipelago
Islands have a quarter endemic species in only 5% of global land surface and insular forests contribute as a biodiverse habitat. Ryukyu Archipelago is a continental island chain in Japan and the biota reflect past geographic history being separated from continental China and Japan mainland. The archipelago is inhabited by many endemic species and some areas (Amami-Oshima Island, Tokunoshima Island, Yambaru in Okinawa Island and Iriomote Island) of the archipelago is a candidate of World Natural Heritage Site. However, the forests in these area meets various problems such as forestry and alien species. Immediate solutions are required to be reflected in the policy of biodiversity conservation and the forest management. Despite such situation, basic information of many endangered species and native ecosystems are still insufficient. We invite authors to contribute original research and review articles regarding the threatened status of endangered forest species and forest community in these four islands. Articles on the impacts by aliens, socio-ecological conservation study and larger biogeographical study including these forest areas are also welcome.
The Editorial Board of the Journal of Forest Research is proposing a special feature titled, "Ecological management of insular forests: conservation of endangered species and native ecosystems in Ryukyu Archipelago." The aim is to accumulate and disseminate biological knowledge about the current status of forest ecosystem in Ryukyu Archipelago. All the manuscripts must be submitted by October 31, 2020.
