Reviews, Replications, and Reports

Review of Communication is dedicated to advancing the field of communication by taking stock of what we know, synthesizing insights across subfields and disciplines, and charting new directions for the future. In this spirit, Review of Communication announces a call for submissions for themed issues centered on the three R’s: Reviews, Replication, and Reports.

These themed issues reflect the journal’s commitment to fostering reflection and progress in communication scholarship. Submissions in these topic areas will be accepted on a rolling basis through 2027, ensuring scholars have regular opportunities to contribute these type of works across the next three years. This call is for the second batch of papers to be considered, with a December deadline for submission. Subsequent calls will be posted regularly to welcome future submissions aligned with the three R’s. We invite submissions from all communication subject areas, research paradigms, and methodological approaches that align with the following categories:

Reviews

Submissions in this category should provide systematic reviews (no more than 9,000 words) that:

  • Synthesize knowledge within communication and allied fields,
  • Identify interdisciplinary connections where shared concepts are studied under different terms,
  • Expose gaps and opportunities within the literature, and
  • Offer actionable recommendations for future research.

Reviews should move beyond mere summaries, offering critical insights that drive the field forward by integrating and interrogating existing knowledge.

Replication

Replication submissions are designed to ensure the reliability and validity of communication research (no more than 9,000 words). These studies should:

  • Faithfully replicate prior work, and
  • Extend the inquiry by additionally incorporating advanced methodologies, improved sampling, or refined measurements.

By enabling meaningful comparisons across time, populations, or methodological rigor, replication studies help solidify or challenge accepted knowledge within discipline.

Reports

We also invite concise research reports (no more than 4,000 words) that:

  • Present key findings from original research,
  • Offer focused analyses with clear implications for communication scholarship, and
  • Address pressing or emerging issues in the field.

Reports provide an opportunity to disseminate impactful work efficiently, offering readers clear and accessible insights.

Submission Instructions

  • Review and Replication word limits: 9,000 words
  • Report word limit: 4,000 words
  • When you submit your paper, please identify whether the manuscript is a review, replication, or report and list the word count on the cover page
