The Dynamic Nature of Dissent

In its simplest form, dissent is expressing opinions or beliefs that are in opposition to those that are commonly held by others. In the field of communication, there is extensive research on dissent within organizations. There is also extensive research within political communication on dissent. Collectively, this line of research has shown that dissent is a powerful form of communication that shapes our interperpersonal, organizational, economic, political, and cultural/social lives. Additionally, in the wake of political and economic insurrections, war, and social movements, it is critical to understand the importance of dissent as a form of transformation across cultures and communities.

Thus, this themed issue asks us as a discipline to explore dissent as a form of communication. The following topics are of particular interest when considering the interdisciplinary nature of communication:

  • What is dissent?
  • Dissent case studies
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to studying dissent
  • The rhetoric of dissent
  • Organizational Dissent
  • Political Dissent
  • Dissent of Social Movements
  • Reviews of literature
