Connected Asia Revisited: Review on China’s Belt & Road Initiative After its Ten Years

Asian Journal of Political Science, an international refereed journal that has published leading research on Asia’s politics and governance since 1993, invites experts on China’s Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI) to write an article for an upcoming special issue.

The special issue focuses on China’s BRI and its connectivity with Asian partners. The purpose of the special issue is to not only reinterpret Asia through the lens of “Connectivity” designed by the BRI, but also critically evaluate China's BRI as it celebrates its 10th anniversary last year. Asia has always had its own connectivity for the Asianization of Asia, with long historical trajectories as evidenced by the ancient Silk Road. The 21st century has been dubbed the “Asian Century” or “the rise of Global South.” However, how ready are Asian countries for the Asian Century? Given that we note that the BRI, spearheaded by China, turns to be 10 years old last year, it is very timely to ask how the BRI could be evaluated in terms of Asian connectivity. Thus, this special issue aims to bring key researchers who can compare, assess, and analyze critical and impartial assessments of the BRI from the perspective of each Asian partner country, not the Western perspective of a “debt trap” or the Chinese government’s own view of the BRI as “community of common destiny of human.”

The research areas we intend to call for are, but not necessarily limited to, as follows:

  • Assessing the BRI processes between partner countries and China (Central Asia and South Asia cases preferred)
  • Assessing the connectivity between global multiple crises and the BRI (Health Silk Road, Digital Silk Road, etc.)
  • Assessing the BRI and its connectivity from the perspective of global governance
  • Assessing the BRI and its connectivity from the perspective of Asian regionalism
