Recent research innovations in shared mobility and logistics systems

The emergence of shared economy has disrupted the transport and logistics sectors. The evolving demand for same-day delivery and on-demand person mobility combined with long-established transport services and emerging gig industries lead to many unanswered societal and environmental challenges. In addition, ubiquitous connectivity and computation open new opportunities for modeling and controlling transportation and logistics systems more efficiently and sustainably.

This special issue of Transportmetrica B: Transport Dynamics is devoted to addressing significant challenges in modeling, designing, planning, and operation of shared on-demand transport and logistic systems. This special issue invites novel scientific contributions that develop dynamic models and methods as well as use and share new field datasets with methodological contributions on mathematical modeling, exact and heuristic optimization methods, machine learning algorithms, and simulation.

This special issue is interested in the following topics but not limited to:

  • Point-to-point mobility services
  • Shared and automated delivery
  • Two- and multi-sided transport markets
  • Shared co-modality
  • Crowdsourced deliveries
  • E-hailing (solo and pooled)
  • Shared micromobility
  • Gig economy in the transport sector
  • Empirical modeling of shared mobility demand and supply
