Recent Advances in Green and Sustainable Corrosion Inhibitors

Corrosion of structures and equipment made from metals and alloys pose a serious problem to the majority of industries. It costs billions of dollars to the economy worldwide. Besides, it endangers lives of the workers, and affects the environment badly in case of accidents. To face and solve this challenge, an increasing number of studies have focused on environmentally friendly, renewable, and efficient corrosion inhibitors, which are promising alternatives to toxic corrosion inhibitors, in order to control corrosion damage in diverse corrosive environments. These materials range from plant extracts to amino acids, ionic liquids, natural/carbohydrate polymers, and carbon quantum dots. Although the subject of corrosion inhibition has been a conventional research topic over the past few decades, more advanced knowledge is still required to win the battle. A comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon will guarantee an improved design to reduce the dramatic consequences.

In this regard, the present special issue aims to shed more light on the recent progress and advances on the usage of green and sustainable inhibitors to protect metallic materials against corrosion in different corrosive conditions, such as acidic, neutral, alkaline, sweet/ sour, and concrete pore environments. We encourage academic and industry researchers to submit high quality original research articles, and reviews on topics including, but not limited to the following:

  • Rare earth-based corrosion inhibitors
  • Vapor inhibitors for corrosion protection
  • Corrosion inhibition strategy: synergistic effects
  • Nanomaterials as corrosion inhibitors
  • Corrosion inhibitors used in new energy, electronics, and petrochemical industries
  • Development of high temperature corrosion inhibitors
  • Plant extracts, ionic liquids, and pharmaceutical drugs as environment-friendly corrosion inhibitors
  • Computational approaches used in corrosion inhibition
  • Smart and organic/inorganic hybrid corrosion inhibitors
