Re-visiting BRI: a domestic development strategy with regional implication for China - sub-regional Southeast Asia cooperation

When considering BRI there exist a continuous misperception or misrepresentation with an overwhelmingly focus on geopolitics one which to a wide extent distorts its character as BRI's domestic focus, from a Chinese perspective is mostly ignored. In the evaluation of BRI related investments another aspect is also often neglected, that participating countries are often utilizing BRI related investment for their own development strategies. Not without reason increase the number of BRI participating countries continuously and reached 139 during 2021. This is not to say there are not challenges associated with BRI investment and papers are welcomed to focus on both aspects. Thus, this special issue aims to address those shortcomings - a overwhelmingly geopolitical focus; the missing aspect of a domestic development strategy from a Chinese perspective; the utilization of BRI related investments by various countries, to support their own development strategies -  by focusing on the impact of BRI related investment generate on sub-regional Southeast Asia within the context of China's own development challenges.

Submissions are encouraged from scholars with a background in Political Science, Business Studies or Economic Geography to this special call to offer an evaluation of BRI related investments in sub-regional Southeast Asia with a specific focus on the following countries: Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand. A focus on China’s own development challenge, to support development within its border provinces (Yunnan and Guangxi), is also welcomed to be included.
