Exploring complementarities and differences between Operational Research and Generative AI to Transform Operations

We invite submissions to a special issue in the Journal of the Operational Research Society on the applications of Operational Research (OR) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in various domains of manufacturing operations and supply chain management.

BACKGROUND

GenAI has opened new avenues with the potential to completely revolutionize manufacturing operations and supply chain systems, by supporting data-driven decision-making that utilizes extensive and varied data streams and complementing OR applications. By harnessing the power of GenAI and OR, manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of operational excellence. Automakers like General Motors are using GenAI to optimize parts and reduce weight in their automobiles. Airbus has also used GenAI-based design to cut the weight of its aircraft partition walls by forty-five percent without sacrificing their structural integrity.

Supply chains (both traditional as well as digital) are going through an impressive transition with the implementation of GenAI applications that either enhance or replace existing OR applications. Anticipating needs, ordering resources, organizing logistics, and amplifying supply chain transparency have all been invigorated with modern algorithms developed using OR and/or GenAI.

OBJECTIVES OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE

The main objective of this special issue is to unlock the potential of GenAI together with OR in areas like smart and sustainable manufacturing, Industry 5.0-based production, digital platforms, and their associated supply chains.

SCOPE

We expect high-quality original research papers to be submitted for this special issue. We especially welcome innovative contributions related to, but not limited to, the following main topics:

  1. Integration of OR methods with GenAI
  2. Applications of GenAI, together with OR, in smart manufacturing operations
  3. Applications of GenAI, together with OR, in supply chain systems
  4. Roles of GenAI, together with OR, in Industry 5.0 age
  5. Applications of GenAI, together with OR, in digital platforms
  6. Applications of GenAI, together with OR, in demand forecasting and inventory control
  7. Applications of GenAI, together with OR, in transportation and logistics operations
  8. Ethical considerations and challenges of GenAI, together with OR, in operations
  9. Impact of GenAI on OR practice in operations
  10. Emerging trends at the intersection of GenAI and OR.

Papers will be subject to a strict review process under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief and Guest Editors, and accepted papers will be published online individually, before print publication.

Submission Instructions

All manuscripts should be submitted through the Journal of Operations Research Society’s online submission system. Submissions must follow the submission guidelines for the journal. All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process to ensure the quality and relevance of the research. Manuscripts should not have been previously published or be under review in any other journal.

Authors should submit their manuscripts by the submission deadline. Manuscripts submitted after the deadline will not be considered for the special issue. When prompted for the article type, please select [SI: Harnessing the Potentials of Generative AI together with OR].

Papers will be subject to a strict review process under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief and Guest Editors, and accepted papers will be published online individually, before print publication.
