Nondestructive Testing for Additive Manufacturing

Papers are invited for this special issue of Research in Nondestructive Evaluation (RNDE) covering topics in the domain of nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/E) in all forms of additive manufacturing. The aim is to provide a collection of the latest research and industrial development work at the interface of NDT/E and additive manufacturing, highlighting the important role that NDT/E plays in this new manufacturing paradigm.

While destructive evaluation methods are often used to characterize and qualify additively manufactured products, NDE methods can provide significant insights without the need for sectioning and damaging the part. Due to the fact that the mechanical performance of additively manufactured parts may often be affected by the presence of defects (i.e., pores, cracks, inclusions, surface roughness, etc.), understanding the type, size, and location of defects is key to managing performance expectations and predicting performance. Furthermore, some internal features of complex-shaped additively manufactured parts, for example in lattice structures or cooling channels in bulk parts, cannot be measured easily. Therefore, NDE methods covering both in-process monitoring and post-build inspection, become crucial in identifying defects and evaluating the quality of the additively manufactured component or product.

  • Research papers and reviews are welcomed for submission.
