New Mobility Paradigms: Changing Dynamics In Planning, Design, Operational Management And Evaluation
Developments in the fields of electrification, automation, and digitalization, as well as new societal trends, are driving the transformation of transport, leading to the introduction of various innovative mobility solutions. Moreover, the coronavirus pandemic has revealed the incredible strength and dynamism with which change processes have disrupted the status quo in our globally networked and more digitized society and with which established mobility patterns have experienced a dramatic shift. Unleashed digitization has offered new opportunities to replace physical mobility with virtual communication and traffic on the one hand and to produce new traffic on the other, for example, through greater online purchasing.
This poses an unprecedented dilemma for transport planners and managers who sometimes must face decisions on different fronts together to achieve integrated solutions in modelling and control, planning and operation of transport systems or management policies. All these changes have meant that the dynamics carried out by those involved in the modelling, design, management, or evaluation process have been affected, generating a methodological space that must be resolved. Moreover, the environmental variable has been a challenge that any study must overcome to achieve efficient and sustainable solutions for the planet. Face these structural changes in traditional models, and numerous methodologies can help to face these challenges, such as machine learning techniques, capturing large volumes of data and their analysis, etc.
This special issue of Transpotmetrica B Transport Dynamic aims to integrate research in the field of modelling, design, management or evaluation of public and private transport systems considering the new paradigms and mobility trends. Specifically, the following main topics have been defined for this purpose:
- Dynamic network modeling
- Simulation and optimization of transportation systems
- Control and management of transportation systems and operation research
- Traffic flow modeling
- Vehicle routing and route planning
- Energy consumption and emission modeling
- Heuristic methods in optimization
- Advanced modeling approaches in logistics
- Traveler information systems
- Sensors and automatic data collection methods
- ITS for multimodal transportation systems; mobility digitisation
- Autonomous vehicle systems applications and advanced vehicular communication technologies
- Shared mobility
- Big data and machine learning in transportation
