Teacher Education in the Context of Teacher Shortages

It has been widely reported that the COVID 19 pandemic has exacerbated long-standing issues related to teacher recruitment and retention in the United States. According to a poll by the National Education Association, 90% of its members feel burned out. As a result, more educators are leaving the profession or retiring early. In this special issue, we inquire about responses to teacher shortages on the district and state level and the role of teacher education in these responses.  For instance, how should teacher education institutions react when asked to quickly train teacher candidates? What are the experiences of preparing uncredentialed teachers who have already been hired to be teachers of record? Are we creating a separate pipeline to teaching? How do we sustain teachers in the profession? We aim to explore a range of questions related to teacher preparation, clinical experience, school partnerships, retention, and other topics pertinent for teacher education in the context of teacher shortages. Pieces that not only document or describe the problem but also depict innovations and dilemmas in addressing these challenges are welcome.
