Digital is the next frontier in healthcare. Implementation of AI and robotics in patient care, utilisation of Big Data for the optimisation of health systems, as well as the rise of eHealth and the Internet of Things means that healthcare will be delivered in a very different way in the next decade compared to how it was 10 years ago. These developments offer both opportunities and challenges for the ethical delivery of healthcare.
This special issue will provide space for the exploration of these opportunities and challenges associated with the introduction of AI into healthcare and what the implication of these might be for patients, healthcare staff and wider society. As such, the issue will help shape the debate on future policies relating to the adoption of these technologies. It will seek contributions, via an open call for papers, that will fall into at least one of the following categories:
- a philosophical, legal or theological analysis of these issues and propose ways on how to deal with them
- a social science exploration of these issues backed with an appropriate ethical analysis
- descriptions of technical/informatics challenges or solutions to the ethical issues associated with AI in healthcare
