Neonatology: Effective Evidence-Based Care for Low- and Middle-Income Countries
In resource-rich areas of the world, the care of small, sick newborns increasingly involves expensive technological interventions. At the same time, lives can be saved and outcomes greatly improved with evidence-guided, effective, and affordable care even in resource-limited settings. Focusing on proven methods to ensure temperature management, respiratory support, nutritious feeding, infection control, and treatment of hyperbilirubinemia leads to marked reductions in mortality and morbidity.
Considering the above, Paediatrics and International Child Health invites submissions of papers dealing with evidence-based effective care of small and sick newborns that is applicable in lower and lower-middle income countries.
The aim of this special issue is to highlight and explain the science and implementation of effective newborn care that does not necessarily require expensive technology. Based on solid evidence and contributing new evidence, articles in this issue will display improved outcomes using treatment that is feasible in lower-resource settings.
The scope of this special issue is on newborn care in resource-limited areas of the world. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Prematurity
- Respiratory Distress in Newborns
- Feeding Problems in Small Babies
- Temperature Regulation in Prematurely-Born Babies
- Infections in Newborns
- Neonatal Jaundice
- Follow-Up Care of Premature Babies.

Scientific evidence guides effective care for sick and small newborns, even in resource-limited areas. Submit papers on the evidence for and implementation of effective newborn care.
Submissions to this Special Issue should follow the format of other submissions to this journal, as mentioned in the Instructions for Authors. When submitting, please ensure to select that your paper is meant for a special issue (in the relevant question), and select the option of the "Neonatology” Special Issue.
The Special Issue may consider Original Research, Review Articles and Case Reports. For Review Articles, please contact the Editor-in-Chief Phil Fischer ([email protected]) about the proposed topic prior to preparing the manuscript.
