Microfinance: Towards a better environment for doing business

The accessibility to modern finance industry aims to fill the gap between the rich and the poor. Starting from South Asia’s field experiment, microfinance has become the one of the most important tools among the financial inclusion policy portfolios (Cull & Morduch, 2017).

Until the late 1990s, the role of the microfinance business as being focused on providing financial services to the poor. Since the early 2000, the debate has moved into the direction of emphasizing the importance of developing financially sustainable microfinance, for the concern on its charged high interest rate (Ahamed & Mallick, 2019). Nowadays, the importance of striving for financial sustainability has been embraced by most parties in the microfinance debate. Donors, policy makers and other financers of microfinance have recently made a shift from subsidizing MFIs institutions towards an increased focus on financial efficiency of these institutions and on a broader scope, business environment.

In light of this, Taizhou University is organizing the international conference “Microfinance: Towards a better environment for doing business”, calling original research articles to join in the latest discussion. The conference particularly welcomes research that is based on (1) new dataset that from field experiment or survey (2) non-single country data.  Topics may include but not limited to:

  • Estimating the real cost of financing for SMEs
  • Policy evaluation of microfinance activities
  • Market friction and accessibility to finance
  • Poverty alleviation and microfinance
  • Rural revitalization, sustainable growth, and microfinance
  • Regulation on microfinance
