Methodological Innovations in Tourist Behavior Studies

In tourism and hospitality research, scholars have focused on various issues of tourist behavior such as destination choice, technology adoption, pro-environmental behavior, on-site decisions, and spatial movements, etc. The traditional approach to studying tourist behavior has often relied on surveys, questionnaires, and interviews to gather data. While these methods have provided valuable insights, they have their limitations. For example, self-reported survey methods may be subject to response bias and social desirability bias, leading to potentially inaccurate data. In recent years, with the advancements in technology, several innovative methodologies have been introduced to study tourist behavior more accurately and comprehensively. For example, the use of big data analytics and machine learning algorithms can help analyse large datasets from various sources such as social media, online booking platforms, and GPS tracking, providing real-time and objective insights into tourist behavior.

The objective of this special issue of the Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing is to explore and showcase these methodological innovations in tourist behavior studies. The special issue invites full research articles (6,000 – 8,000 words) that highlight and demonstrate the use of new methodologies in studying focal tourist behavior. The various dimensions of tourist behavior of interest include but are not limited to, destination choice, travel decision-making process, information search and retrieval, technology adoption and usage, pro-environmental behavior, on-site behavior, spatial movements, and others. The authors are expected to identify a focal tourist behavior and explain how the new methodology addresses the limitations of traditional research methods with elaborative reasoning and some empirical examples. These new methodologies could include but are not limited to, the use of mobile applications for data collection, sensor technologies for tracking and monitoring tourist behavior, virtual reality simulations for studying decision-making processes, eye-tracking technology for understanding information search and retrieval patterns, and social network analysis for examining social influence on tourist behavior.

Submission Instructions

Interested researchers are strongly encouraged to submit their papers for consideration, and they are welcome to send their submission earlier than the deadline.

During the submission process, please state clearly that your submission is intended for publication consideration in the special issue “Methodological Innovations in Tourist Behavior Studies”.

All submissions will be blind reviewed by at least three reviewers. The assessment of manuscripts will consider their academic value and contribution as well as the meaningful insights they offer to guide future tourist behavior studies.

While all accepted papers will appear in the same issue, accepted papers will be published online as soon as they are ready for online publication.

Timeframe:

  • Interested authors are encouraged to submit a 500-word abstract of their work to guest editors’ emails by May 15, 2024. Guest editors will provide feedback on the abstract.
  • Completed manuscripts should be submitted from June 1, 2024, to October 31, 2024.
  • Authors will receive feedback on their full manuscripts by December 31st, 2024.
