Smart maritime logistics supported by advanced technologies

Digitalization and automation have been key driving forces which change various features of ports and shipping industries in recent years. Especially, successful developments and applications of new technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, to various industries ignites researchers to find various interesting research issues of applying these new technologies to maritime logistics. Considering automation of ports and ships is a popular trend in the maritime industry, new technologies can be essential elements to explain recent changes and forecast future trends in automation of maritime logistics.

Various data became available due to the improved information technology (IT) infrastructure in the maritime industry. Huge amount of data is being collected by computerized operating system in the maritime industry and internet of things (IoT) and other real time data on the locations or status of logistics equipment and cargos became available. These data provide new opportunities for the industry to improve  logistics processes.

The purposes of this Special Issue of the Maritime Policy and Management are to publish the state-of-the-art research on the maritime logistics problem supported by new technologies. Submissions that uncover new research problems in the real world, develop novel and tailored methodologies to tackle the problems, and present innovative applications, will be welcome. This Special Issue will consider submissions from The 11th International Conference on Logistics and Maritime Systems (LOGMS 2023) Conference in Busan, South Korea, as well as submissions from an open track on the MPM submission system.

The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Big data analytics for maritime logistics
  • Maritime safety and security with intelligent technologies
  • Optimizing operation of maritime logistics
