Low-temperature plasma as radical source for biology, medicine and food resource

Plasma, the 4th state of matter in physics, presents higher energy than gas by ionization. High-temperature plasma has been essential for the manufacturing process of nano-scale semiconductors. Now low-temperature plasma close to our body temperature has been developed in this century and is applied to various aspects of biology. It is established that plasma can load oxidative stress via a variety of reactive species to the exposed target locations. Furthermore, liquids exposed to low-temperature plasma can induce distinct biological effects in comparison to the chemical agents thus far used, including efficient disinfection, promotion of wound healing, cancer cell-specific cytotoxicity, and high-yields of plants and aquaculture. This special issue in Free Radical Research intends to collect cutting-edge original and review articles in this novel area.
