Literature Review on Industrial and Production Engineering toward Sustainability

The industrial and production engineering is understood as the design and production of goods and services, along with the installation and improvement of integrating systems to optimize operational efficiency in manufacturing system based on high quality, high fidelity, and real-time data, in order to create sustainable value and economic growth (Lenz et al., 2020). The concept is critical for firms to pursue the sustainable development goals since they enable the raw materials and energy transformation into the desirable products to maintain the life quality and the modernization (Ren and Toniolo, 2021; Battesini et al. 2021).

Many studies on the engineering and manufacturing topic was implemented in recent years since industrial 4.0 competence provided ideals to strengthen opportunities. However, the most of studies are still in the nascent stage, with a lack of understanding on the effectiveness and practical examples that are only mentioned scattered and fragmented, especially in the transition to the industrial 4.0 and sustainable performance (Tseng et al., 2021; Nazarenko et al., 2021). The review on the topic of industrial and production engineering is still lacking and needs to be analyzed based on the principles and technologies to provide the scope of opportunities and future study avenues (Enyoghasi and Badurdeen, 2021; Dabous et al., 2021). Taken on this existing gap, this special issue focuses on the aid of better understanding industrial and production engineering literature to strengthen the high-quality response on research contributions for the industrial engineering community.

Besides original researches on technical and operational issues, topic in the context of literature review generation is requiring for better studies. Accordingly, the following research guided the special issue is followed as:

(i) Overview on the holistic concept that describes the most appropriate indicators, relevant standards, antecedents to advanced industrial and production engineering and offering analyses for industrial and production engineering clusters in order to identify relevant enables, as well as challenges and opportunities for further studies of investigation.

(ii) Digital platforms as part of industry 4.0 can be mentioned to have better approach such as cyber-physical systems, smart systems, internet-of-things, digital twins, cloud computing, big data driven and smart communication, safety and security, artificial intelligence for sustainability, circular economy in digital environment, business intelligence and virtual reality for environmental sustainability.

(iii) Literature on methodologies approaches, mathematical models for multi-dimensional supply chain, operational performance, associated production flow mechanisms, manufacturing systems is advanced to reveal understanding for the industrial and production engineering predominance.

(iv) The remaining covers research intends to industrial cases, the understanding and implementation in the industrial manufacturing to providing insight into the areas of application and highlighting possible future research expansions.

Manuscript Preparation and Submission

An online-only grouping of Special Issue articles traditionally assigned to a single Special Issue. The articles in a SI will be assigned a unique identifier and published in a regular journal issue. The unique identifier allows to simultaneously adding the article to a SI of Journal of Industrial and Production Engineering in tandfonline.com. Articles grouped together in a SI retain their original citation details.
