Skills for Sustainable Futures

Among the series of crises affecting the global, arguably none is more serious and pressing than the climate crisis. This has profound and urgent implications for how we live, work and learn in the immediate future. This clearly is of huge significance for how we think about and do vocational education and training.

Current VET systems were established to address the needs of industrialisation regarding the productivity of workers. Mainstream, formal VET is complicit in unsustainable practices that are embedded in this history. The key occupations of formal vocationalism have been tied to the Northern paradigm of carbon capitalism (with its global reach) and to the extractive logic of colonial capitalism.

There is a growing academic awareness of the need to address the challenges of just transitions and what this means for the futures of work, employment and jobs. This includes a growing realisation that the dominant notion of work as formal, male, full- time, permanent and paid was always flawed in its assumptions about gender, race, class, disability, etc. This is tied to a growing acceptance that this model of work is irrelevant to the majority of current and future workers. Moreover, work must also adjust to new technologies and, at least potentially, to calls for basic income grants. What forms of VET, then, are needed to address just and sustainable skills futures?

Responding to the dearth of academic articles in this area, JVET proposes a special issue that seeks to make an overdue foundational contribution to an urgent debate. We want papers that look at this challenge through a variety of lenses. We will include papers that are empirically focused on formal and nonformal VET, at enterprise and sectoral level activities and at the policy level, as well as those which do more fundamental theoretical work. We will prioritise author diversity and particularly encourage early career authors, South and North. We will put a mentoring programme in place and organise online meetings for authors to share their ideas at key moments in the process.

Contributions might address, but are not limited to, the following concerns:

• the attitudes of vocational teachers, learners and employers to sustainable skills greening strategies of VET providers
• sectoral attempts to transform workstreams and qualifications
• policies for green skills, jobs and economies
• youth voice and sustainability within VET
• sustainability and apprenticeship
• the relationship between the green jobs and decent jobs agendas green jobs, sustainability and just transitions
• green jobs, sustainability and supply chains
• attempts to develop green and decent skills in the informal economy skills for sustainable rural livelihoods
• skills for provisioning
• imagining a post-Anthropocene VET
• the political ecology of skills

Submission Instructions

Potential authors are asked to submit their abstracts of up to 500 words by 5pm (BST) on 13 June 2022.

Abstracts should be submitted online here.

Authors having accepted abstracts at this first stage will be invited to submit a full manuscript by 16 December 2022 (via ScholarOne).

• Stage 2 full paper via ScholarOne 8000 words including references

The special issue will be published in early 2024.
