Sustainable Tourism in Emerging Economies

Sustainability as a paradigm of development has been widely practiced and researched in the developed economies with an established body of knowledge on different industries and sectors including tourism. Nonetheless, these theories or approaches developed largely from the western contexts may not be completely applicable to an eastern (emerging economic) situation due to cultural differences. In the meantime, in the developing economies, while research on sustainable tourism has also been conducted over the years, its priorities have often been on the “short-term” aspects of economic development, a growth which often occurs at the cost of sociocultural and environmental integrity. As a result, the “long-term” fronts of development in emerging economies, as well as the role of tourism in facilitating change for the better have been very poorly understood.

This special issue aims to address the (cross-)cultural differences, through comparisons and contrasts (if possible), in the ways of thinking about and practicing sustainable tourism in emerging origin/destination societies. Its focus will be on local knowledge or theories about sustainability and tourism, as well as contemporary practices in the realm of sustainable tourism in a non-western context. Abstracts will be invited to include (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Local knowledge and/or theories behind sustainability and tourism
  • Tourism after the “two mountains theory” (Clear waters and green mountains are as good as mountains of gold and silver)
  • Pro-environmental practices in/through tourism
  • The role of tourism in “new” rural community development
  • Rural tourism, sustainable livelihood and community wellbeing
  •  “Targeted” poverty alleviation through tourism in resource-impoverished rural communities
  • Smart tourism facilitating “one-village-one-product” attraction/destination development
  • Homestays and rural tourism entrepreneurships
  • Carbon neutrality in tourism
  • Global warming and its effect on attraction/destination development
  • Sustainable food tourism and gastronomy
  • Stakeholder collaborations in (for) “new” tourism practices
  • Mobilizing intergenerational social/human capitals for tourism
  • Effects of COVID-19 on sustainable tourism

While the above topics or practices are more commonly found (or more applicable) in East Asian and Southeast Asian situations, similar local knowledge and theories as well as practices from emerging economies in other parts of the world are also invited for this special issue. Upon completion, this special issue will have contributed to knowledge, with a collection of research articles to feature on sustainable tourism theories and practices in emerging/developing economies.
