Spatial Humanities: Perspectives from the Library
Library professionals have demonstrated expertise and a role to play in spatial humanities research, as enablers, partners, collaborators, and scholars in their own right. The purpose of this special issue is to highlight examples of such work and the value that map and geospatial library professionals and collections can bring to advancing spatial humanities scholarship.
We encourage a broad range of contributions including original research articles; literature review articles; case studies on collections, projects, and pedagogy; and critical reflection papers supported by literature and/or professional practice. We welcome submissions from library professionals with perspectives from beyond map and geospatial information librarianship, as well as manuscripts co-authored by library experts and their disciplinary research collaborators.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- Reflections on library-researcher partnerships in the spatial humanities
- Spatial humanities in the classroom – pedagogical interventions and opportunities
- Public humanities and community engagement (e.g., outreach, exhibits, participatory mapping)
- Creating, curating, and using new spatial datasets from library and archival collections (e.g., textual resources, maps, aerial photographs)
- Sustainability and preservation considerations for spatial humanities research projects
- Methods and tools for spatial and spatiotemporal analysis and visualization of humanities data, including alternatives to GIS-based approaches
- Strategies for addressing locational uncertainty in the spatial humanities
- Historical and literary mapping, including representations of fictional and imaginary places
