Recent advances in the understanding of the development and functions of roots in forest ecosystems

Tree roots are an integral component of forest ecosystems, contributing to tree development, ecological dynamics, and biogeochemical processes. Fifteen years ago, the Journal of Forest Research dedicated a special issue to tree roots research “Development and function of roots of forest trees”, specifically focusing on the development of this field in Japan. Since that publication, there have been substantial advancements in the understanding of the development and functions of roots in forest ecosystems.

In this special issue, we aim to revisit the topic of tree roots and share and discuss recent advancements. The past decade and a half have seen significant progress in observational techniques and the characterization of root functional traits (e.g., root morphology, anatomy, chemistry, and physiology). Our understanding of the tree roots’ interaction with soil organisms has also progressed. However, many questions regarding the roles of tree roots in a changing climate remain unanswered.

This issue brings together a collection of research topics that address the physiological, ecological, and biogeochemical roles of tree roots in forest ecosystems. The special issue includes recent findings from field experiments and laboratory observations in both coarse and fine roots conducted worldwide, as well as relevant meta-analysis and modeling studies. The focus of this issue is not limited to living roots but also includes dead and decomposing roots in the rhizosphere and forest soil. Roots of all types of vascular plants, woody and non-woody, in forest ecosystems are the target of the current special issue. We warmly welcome submissions comprising original research and comprehensive review articles that explore the diverse facets of tree root science.
